Fire hydrants provide fire services quick and reliable access to large volumes of water during a fire.

They are located in streets and around buildings and it is important that they can identified and accessed quickly in case of an emergency. It is also important that fire hydrants and hydrant system perform in a way that emergency services expect.

Within the boundaries of your site, you may have fire hydrants or even a booster assembly. If you do, it is your responsibility to ensure the system is inspected and serviced to ensure the system works. This not only helps to keep your site safe, but also those around you.

what is a fire hydrant?

A fire hydrant is not to be confused with a fire extinguisher!  A hydrant is essentially a large tap (valve) that the fire services can attach a fire hose to for the purpose of fighting fires.

Fire hydrants are part of a fire hydrant system.  The whole system can also contain other fittings that may be required to provide a reliable water supply to an area or building.  Systems can consist of hydrants, booster assemblies, valves, pipes, pressure gauges and fire hose reels.

When a booster assembly is on your property,  you must have a valid block plan which shows a layout of the emergency services water system at your site.  The booster cabinet must also have a sign that states the working pressure and test pressure of the system.  This helps eliminate over pressurising
the system and failure.

Hydrants must be inspected and serviced to Australian Standards AS1851.4 – 2012.
