DRY CHEMICAL EXTINGUISHERS

These extinguishers are also know as powder extinguishers and work by breaking the chemical chain reaction and stopping the combustion process. The volume of powder can also restrict the air flow to the fire producing a smothering effect. Fire fighting powder consists of solid particles and requires a lot of clean up.

CARBON DIOXIDE EXTINGUISHERS

Carbon Dioxide (Co2) is a colourless and odourless gas used to displace oxygen and smother fires. It is heavier than air and as it expands when being released fro the extinguisher, becomes very cold. It leaves no residue, but can disperse very quickly.

WATER EXTINGUISHERS

Water is stores in the extinguisher under pressure and when discharged, act on the fire by cooling. As water turns to steam, it rises from the area effectively removing the heat and reducing the temperature of the fire. When the temperature has lowered enough, the fire will be extinguished.

WET CHEMICAL EXTINGUISHERS

This uses a water based solution that is designed to extinguisher cooking fats and oil fires. The liquid converts the oil or fat in a combustion resistant soap, creating a solid layover of the affected area. The soap layer has a smothering effect and coats the surface preventing re-ignition.

FOAM EXTINGUISHERS

Foam extinguishers are water based with a foam additive, usually between three and six percent. The additive converts the water to foam which enables the medium to float on the burning surface cutting off the oxygen and reducing the temperature until the fire is extinguished.
