Dry Chemical Extinguishers

These extinguishers are also know as powder extinguishers and work by breaking the chemical chain reaction and stopping the combustion process. The volume of powder can also restrict the air flow to the fire producing a smothering effect. Fire fighting powder consists of solid particles and requires a thorough clean up.  It does not conduct electricity.

Dry chemical is best used on solid materials, flammable liquids and electrical fires.

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers

Carbon Dioxide (Co2) is a colourless and odourless gas used to displace oxygen and smother fires. It is heavier than air and as it expands when being released from the extinguisher, becomes very cold.  It leaves no residue, but can disperse very quickly.

Co2 can be used on flammable liquid and electrical fires.

Water Extinguishers

Water is stored within the extinguisher under pressure and when discharged, acts by cooling the fire.  As the water turns to steam, it rises from the area effectively removing the heat and reducing the temperature of the fire. When the temperature has lowered enough, the fire will be extinguished.

Water should only be used on solid materials such as paper, wood and textiles.  It can react poorly if applied to flammable liquids and cooking fats.  It can also conduct electricity.

Wet Chemical Extinguishers

This type of extinguisher uses a water based solution that is designed to extinguish cooking fats and oil fires. The liquid converts the oil or fat into a combustion resistant soap, creating a solid layer over of the affected area. The soap layer has a smothering effect and coats the surface preventing re-ignition which gradually released steam to help cool the affected area.

Wet chemical can be used on solid materials, much like water and is best suited for cooking fats and oil fires.  It can conduct electricity.

Foam Extinguishers

Foam extinguishers are water based with a foam additive, usually between three and six percent. When activated, the additive helps convert the water to foam which enables the medium to float on the burning surface cutting off the oxygen and reducing the temperature until the fire is extinguished.

Foam can be used on solid materials and is designed to extinguish flammable liquid fires.  Having a large water content, it can conduct electricity.
